"My Dress Hangs Here"
This project explores themes of self-identity through the lens of immigration and the experience of growing up in a culturally and ethnically different country. It reflects on the complexities of belonging and alienation faced by individuals who exist between cultures. The artist’s personal experience serves as the foundation of the work — growing up in a country where, despite being born there, studying there, and speaking the national language fluently, they were often met with social rejection and exclusion. Hearing phrases like “go back to your country” became a painful reminder of their perceived otherness, reinforcing a sense of not truly belonging anywhere.
At the same time, returning to their ethnic homeland offered no sense of full acceptance either; there, they were seen as outsiders shaped by another culture. Existing between two worlds, the artist embodies a hybrid identity — one that carries fragments of both cultures yet is never fully claimed by either. Through this project, the artist examines how identity is continuously negotiated in spaces of in-betweenness, revealing the emotional landscape of those who are perpetually searching for a place to call home.
The project consists of 3 images, two of which are created using darkroom camera less process. The dress on the other hand, was created from life size using scanography, and sticking it in the post processing.
